Cashew: Togo takes part in two major meetings in Abidjan

(Togo First) - Togo participated last week in the fifth session meeting of the International Cashew Advisory Council (ICAC), which was held from April 5 to 6, 2023 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. According to the Togolese Ministry of Trade, which reported the information, the meeting gathered the ministers of agriculture, industry, and trade of the ICAC member countries.

In parallel, the country also took part in the fourth edition of the International Exhibition of Cashew Processing Equipment and Technology (SIETTA), which took place from 6 to 8 April 2023. It was attended by several actors from the cashew sector who discussed innovations in equipment and processing technologies.

The Togolese delegation sent to Abidjan included the chiefs of the cabinet of the ministers of trade and agriculture, the national focal points at the ICAC, and some members of the cashew interprofessional management board.

With the ICAC’s experts, they assessed the activity report of the ICAC Executive Secretariat; reviewed and adopted the Council’s 2023-2027 Strategic Plan and its budget for 2023. They also formulated and drafted solutions and recommendations, and issued a final communiqué.

Established in 2016, the ICAC represents 84% of African cashew production and 57% of global production. It was launched by eight African countries (including Togo). Together, these countries contribute 60%-80% of global production or 1.3 million tons of cashew nuts. The ICAC aims to better control market prices by bringing together the main producers.

After moving from the 133rd to 127th place under the 2020 Doing Business’ construction permit index, Togo intends to reiterate this feat in the coming edition of the global ranking. To this end, it has introduced this year multiple reforms.

Owing this performance to multiple reforms aimed at making it easier for businesses to access power and water, Lomé plans to introduce even more reforms this year to keep up its improvements.

Out of all the 'Doing Business’ indicators, Property Registration is where Togo has improved the most since 2018. Indeed, after spending years in the lowest part of this ranking, the country now seeks to beat Rwanda which is the best performer on this index in Africa. To do so, Lomé has been introducing many reforms, with the latest batch implemented this year.
