EU extends €10 million financing package to Togo, for agricultural development

(Togo First) - Togo inked a €10 million financing deal with the European Union (EU), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Food Program (WFP), last Thursday, 20 April 2023. The deal was sealed at the closing of the last stage of the Regional Fora of Togolese Agricultural Producers (FOPAT) in Kara.

Part of the funds will finance the Pro-SADI, a project aimed at strengthening food systems to make sure that small producers have sustainable access to inputs. The rest will be spent on a school feeding project that covers Togo’s public elementary schools.

In detail, the first project will make it easier for small farmers to access inputs, markets, and extension services, while the second will improve student nutrition in 50 elementary schools in the Kara and Savanes regions.

The €10 million package aligns with Axis 2 of the Multi-Year Joint Programming Document (JMPD) 2021-2027, which calls for supporting the development of sustainable agribusinesses and the preservation of natural resources.

"Team Europe is firmly committed to assisting Togo in its efforts to strengthen the resilience of food systems and to the development of sustainable agro-industries in Togo," said Joaquín Tasso Vilallonga, head of the European delegation in Togo at the signing of the agreement.

Before the recent agreement, the EU had provided Togo with €114 million to foster the sustainable development of its agribusiness sector and finance environmental protection projects.
